M51 Whirlpool Galaxy

LinkA "meh" attempt. My focus had shifted between the time I actually achieved focus on a nearby star (Alkaid) and the my rig slewed to M51. Anyway, 6 minute exposures here because the site I was at had enough light pollution to produce unwanted artifacts during post-processing. Or I fork out some dosh for a light pollution filter, but having just bought a new Jeep, the financial officer may take issue with another personal purchase.

Image Details:

  • Imaging Scope: Astrotelescopes 80mm ED Refractor
  • Imaging Camera: Nikon D7000
  • Guiding Scope: William Optics 66mm Petzval Refractor
  • Guiding Camera: Meade DSI-C
  • Mount: Celestron CGEM
  • Exposures: 8 * 6 minute lights, 5 * 6 minute darks
  • ISO 640
  • Aligned and Stacked in Deep Sky Stacker
  • Post-Processing in GIMP (contrast, saturation, curves and unsharp mask)
  • Noise Reduction in NeatImage (Filter and Sharpen)

Well, despite the issues with the light pollution, I think this is a good image. Maybe you could explain to the CFO that purchasing an LPF will help the environment. :o)
